Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best age to train a dog?
The optimum age is 6 months, however, we will consider younger dogs as long as they are leash trained and can take and understand a simple command. They should also be past their “fear period” where loud noises or other things do not distract or frighten them.
How strong is the shock?
The shock is similar to a static shock you can get by scrapping you feet across a carpet and touching a door knob. It is also similar to a TENS machine used in physical therapy.
Can I just do my back yard or front yard?
Yes, keeping in mind that the wire must be on a continuous loop. We can do any design just about any style of configuration you need.
How long does it take to train my dog?
We suggest that you keep in mind that this is all new for your dog and that to be fair to your pet you take the training in small doses. This mean that for a period of two weeks you keep your dog under your watchful eye and control.
Can I take my dog for a walk?
We ask that you do not let the dog physically cross the boundary line for at least 1 month after the start of the training. That does not mean that you cannot take the dog for a walk. It does mean that for this period you will be asked to either carry the dog or put him in the car an back across the perimeter.
What if my dog is scared to go into the yard after he is shocked?
One of the most important elements of training is showing your dog what is safe. They will know where not to go but, they may not understand where they can go. It is important that you spend time every day playing with your dog in the safe area. The more time you spend in the safe area, the easier it will be to train you dog.
What happens if my dog runs through the fence?
Often during the training period the dog simply forgets and runs through. This is very common. In fact, it is not “if” my dog runs through, it is “when”. Many times the dog runs right back if you have been diligent to show him where it is safe. Sometimes they run through and will stand on the other side and bark for you. When this happens, take the collar off the dog and bring both back through the fence. Do not drag your dog through the fence. If the dog challenges the fence more than 2 times during the training period you should immediately call the office.
Where can I buy batteries?
The DogWatch batteries are not propitiatory. You can either call the office and we will send them to you immediately or you can get them from good battery store such as Batteries Plus.
Can I add dogs to the system?
Yes, you may add as many dogs as you please as each dog wears its own level of correction. You can also train additional dogs on the audible level without turning the shock off for the existing dog.
How big an area can you do with this fence?
We can do up to 100 acres.
